A narrative picture story based on daily coverage of general or breaking news that is of primary interest to an entire nation or the world. It is usually created with the intent to share nationally or internationally.
Ukraine’s 93rd Mechanized Brigade firing a mortar at Russian positions from outside Bakhmut on May 19, 2023. Although Russia claimed control over Bakhmut after a year of bloody fighting, with tens of thousands of casualties on both sides, battles continue to rage for control of the villages around the lifeless city. Muddy trenches, fields of mines, cheap drones laden with explosives and millions of rounds of artillery have combined to turn the front into a charnel house, where every movement is filled with peril.
The war in Ukraine, now in its second year, has devastated the country. Rolling barrages of artillery strikes have cratered and pockmarked the hills and forests of eastern Ukraine. Hidden in the forests, an extensive underground network is Ukraine’s first line of defense and where its soldiers prepare for the fight ahead. In some places, Ukrainian forces are on the defensive. In others, they are on the offensive. Along much of the eastern front, they are simply fighting to hold the line against a daily barrage of shelling.
