Finalist: Loss and Destruction in a Small Mississippi Town

A narrative picture story based on daily coverage of general or breaking news that is of primary interest to an entire nation or the world. It is usually created with the intent to share nationally or internationally.

Loss and Destruction in a Small Mississippi Town

A powerful tornado tore through Rolling Fork, Mississippi, killing at least 25 people in the state and one more in the neighboring state of Alabama. The tornado was one of the worst on record in the state’s history, with all the damage presenting tough challenges for the majority-Black communities that were most affected. There are also questions about how various levels of governments should have better prepared and warned residents, many of whom live below the poverty line.
